Great metrics are like great training: focused, meaningful, and aligned to business value. If your learning dashboard doesn’t tell you whether your people are better at their jobs, it’s time to upgrade what you’re measuring.
Great metrics are like great training: focused, meaningful, and aligned to business value. If your learning dashboard doesn’t tell you whether your people are better at their jobs, it’s time to upgrade what you’re measuring.
What does success look like in learning? Too often, organisations rely on metrics to measure training effectiveness that are easy to collect but don’t tell you much.
– Sign-ups
– Completion rates
– Time spent learning
At Decoded, we’ve moved beyond surface metrics. We focus on the signals that reflect real impact.
We measure learner confidence and competence before and after every session. Not just “did you like it?” but “did it change your ability to act?”
Our data shows a consistent 8–10 point uplift in perceived skill level across technical and strategic subjects. That’s momentum.
Yes, we look at satisfaction (see our article – Why Learner Satisfaction Is the New Productivity Metric). But not in isolation. We triangulate satisfaction with:
– Application: Did learners use what they learned?
– Advocacy: Would they recommend it to a colleague?
– Retention: Can they recall and apply it after a week?
These are the kinds of metrics to measure training effectiveness that actually tell you something useful.
In bespoke programmes, we often link learning to strategic outcomes, like better forecasting, improved customer journeys, or faster project delivery. If learning isn’t moving a KPI, it’s just noise.
We even measure what happens after the session. Our help desk satisfaction scores sit at 100%, because ongoing support is part of how we define learning, not a separate service.
What do meaningful metrics look like in practice?
At Decoded, we put these principles into action, helping clients move beyond surface-level metrics and focus on what really matters: skill uplift, application, and measurable impact.
